The Rajput king of Mewar, Maharana Pratap is known as a fearsome warrior and an excellent combat strategist, who protected the Mewar region against repeated onslaughts from the Mughals. The ruler of Mewar, Maharana Pratap was born on May 9 in the year 1540. He was the eldest son of Uday Singh II, founder of Udaipur, and Maharani Jaiwanta Bai.
As per the Hindu calendar, his Jayanti is celebrated on the third day of the month of Jyeshta. But as per the English calendar the birth anniversary of the 13th Rajput king of Mewar - Pratap Singh I is celebrated every year on May 9. Maharana Pratap had three younger brothers - Shakti Singh, Vikram Singh and Jagmal Singh. He also had had 2 stepsisters.
When Mahara Pratap became the King?
Maharana Pratap became the King of Mewar in 1572, after the death of Udai Singh. He was the 13th Rajput king of Mewar, Rajasthan.
The 'mountain man'
Maharana Pratap is revered as one of the strongest warriors India has ever seen. Standing at 7 feet 5 inches, he would carry an 80-kilogram spear and two swords weighing around 208 kilograms in total. He would also wear an armor weighing 72 kilograms.
First native freedom fighter
Pratap had rebuilt his capital in the city of Chavand, around 60 kilometers south of Udaipur, and spent the rest of his life there. Because of his fight for freedom against the Mughals, Maharana Pratap is widely regarded as India's first native freedom fighter.
